In the past three weeks, Apple’s rolled out three iOS 9 updates. On
September 11th, the company rolled out the first iOS 9.1 beta for
iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The update doesn’t have a release date but
there’s a good chance that it, and its new emojis, will be out before the end of the year.
On September 16th, Apple rolled out the iOS 9.0 upgrade, the first
iOS 9 update and a massive release for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
iOS 9.0 brought a ton of new features, enhancements and problems along
with it.
To address these initial iOS 9 problems, Apple’s rolled out a brand
new update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. That update? iOS 9.0.1.
Earlier this week, Apple rolled out iOS 9.0.1 to all devices capable
of running iOS 9. That list includes the iPhone 6, Apple’s former
flagship that was recently replaced by the iPhone 6s.
The iPhone 6 iOS 9.0.1 update is small, about 20MB in size, but it packs a punch.
The update comes with several key bug fixes including one for busted
alarms and timers. It’s an update that iPhone 6 users should be paying
attention to.
In the two days since its arrival, we’ve seen several new details
emerge and today we want to take a look at everything iPhone 6 users
need to know about this brand new iOS 9 update. Keep all of this in mind
as we push away from the update’s release date.
1 - iOS 9.0.1 on iPhone 6 Performance
|
|
|
We've been using the iOS 9.0.1 update on several versions of the iPhone 6 and so far, we haven't run
into any major problems.
Battery
life is holding up well, connectivity is strong, and the device is
still really fast with the new
update on board. App performance is still
pretty good though we continue to see Chrome crash with
great
frequency. It's a bit odd and we're hoping for an update soon.
If you're looking for more in depth feedback, take a look at our initial impressions. You might also
want to dig around on YouTube, social media, or the Apple Discussion Forums for feedback about
the iPhone 6 iOS 9.0.1 update's performance.
2 - You Can Downgrade from iOS 9.0.1
|
|
|
If you want to trial the iOS 9.0.1 update on your iPhone 6, you can.
Apple is still signing off on the iOS 8.4.1 update
and iOS 9.0 update which means that if you
want to,
you can downgrade
to either one of those if iOS 9.0.1 isn't performing up to your
standards.
Of course, this will only be available for a limited
amount of time. Apple will, at some point,
close up the downgrade
loophole and you'll be stuck. This typically happens one to two weeks
after a new update arrives so we could see it happen soon.
|
3 - You Should Prep Your Phone for iOS 9.0.1
|
|
|
The iOS 9.0.1 update is a bug fix update but even the smallest bug
fix updates can cause problems.
iOS 9.0.1 problems are starting to
emerge and that means that you'll want to prepare before you
download
and install the new software.
Fortunately for you, we put together a guide that takes you step-by-step through the pre-install
process that we ourselves
use. These pre-release tips have helped us cut down on the amount
of
problems we see post-release and they're worth a look ahead of an
install. |
4 - These iOS 9.0.1 Upgrade Tips Should Help
|
|
|
Once you decide that you want to install the iOS 9.0.1 update on your iPhone 6, we recommend taking
a look at our upgrade tips.
These
will help you make a smooth transition from whatever you are on, be it
iOS 9.0 or something
else, to the iOS 9.0.1 update. These are the things
we do during every roll out and they're a big reason
why we typically
come out of iOS updates without any major problems. |
5 - You Might Not Want to Install Right Now
|
|
|
While it might be tempting to install the iPhone 6 iOS 9.0.1 update
right away, there are some reasons
why you might want to avoid the
update. At least for the time being.
For instance, if you are
traveling for work or fun, you might want to wait until you get home.
The last thing you want to do during a trip is deal with iOS headaches.
iOS 9.0.1 problems are
very real and there's a chance you'll notice
something after you install. |
6 - There Are iPhone 6 iOS 9.0.1 Problems
|
|
|
We mentioned that there are iOS 9.0.1 problems. There are. And some of these iOS 9 problems are
affecting Apple's iPhone 6.
As we move away from the iOS 9.0.1 release date, we continue to hear and see complaints about
the iOS 9.0.1 update. Problems range from battery life issues to problems with Wi-Fi to issues with
app updates and the App Store.
Before you freak out, know that most of these iOS 9.0.1 problems appear to be isolated. There is a
passcode flaw that you should be aware of but the other problems seem to be affecting a small fraction
of iOS 9 users.
We don't know when Apple will release its next iOS 9 update so you'll need to be extremely careful
with this update.
7 - There Are Fixes for iOS 9.0.1 Problems
|
|
|
If you're already seeing iOS 9.0.1 problems or you just want to be prepared, you'll want to take a
peek at our list of fixes for iOS 9.0.1 problems.
We've
covered the most common problems affecting iOS 9 users after iOS 9.0
and iOS 9.0.1 and
it's a great place to start if you're looking for some
help before, or after, your iOS 9.0.1 upgrade. |
|
8 - Still No iOS 9 Jailbreak
|
|
|
There is no iOS 9 jailbreak and it's still not clear when one will be released. If your iPhone 6 is
jailbroken, don't install iOS 9.0 or iOS 9.0.1.
It looks like jailbreak devs will release an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak so you'll want to be on the look
out for that ahead of the iOS 9 jailbreak release.
9 - New iOS 9.1 Beta
|
|
|
This week, Apple released a new iOS 9.1 beta. iOS 9.1 beta 2 is now
available to those in the
developer beta and those in the free Beta
Software Program.
The iOS 9.1 beta 2 should be more stable than the first release which means now might be a
good time to try the update and its emojis ahead of the public release.
Beta
software isn't for everyone though so you'll want to dig into feedback
and the beta program
itself before you commit to the update this early.
10 - iPhone 6 iOS 9.1 Release Date
|
|
|
The only confirmed iOS update in Apple's pipeline is iOS 9.1. The update still doesn't have a
specific release date but it looks like Apple will release it alongside the iPad Pro. The 12-inch
iPad Pro will be released in November.
With
no iOS 9.0.2 release in sight, and an iOS 9.1 update still weeks away,
you'll need to be
extremely proactive if you run into trouble with the
iOS 9.0.1 update. |
